Stetson

Seventeen-year-old Stetson has two goals: graduate from high school (even though all his friends have already dropped out to go work at the mill) and finish rebuilding an old Honda Civic (even though his father doesn’t think Stet’s capable of finishing anything). But when Stet’s fourteen-year-old sister shows up, he discovers that sometimes responsibility can take you beyond your original goals.

“In this novel of broken dreams turned to new possibilities, Rottman delivers a believable story with characters that ring true. Stetson's self-reliance and his relationships with Kayla and Jason are particularly touching and serve as driving forces throughout the work.”

Kirkus Reviews

“A clever, sensitive, talented teen nobly striving to overcome a lousy parent and a bad environment—one who can fix cars and pull pranks, too—this is a good formula for a character teens will admire and embrace. Stet is sympathetic and believable, and the emotional connections he forges with the owner of the salvage yard, a gruff but caring Viet vet, and with his sister are affecting.”

KLIATT, Paula Rohrlick

“Stetson proves himself to be a stellar character whose friendship with crusty salvage yard boss Jason allows him to face some truths about his shortcomings and determine a direction for his life.”

Booklist, Roger Leslie

“With the thrill of the rapids, realistic family dynamics, a little romance, and likable characters, this book is a great read.”

School Library Journal

“Rottman gets the details of the river trips just right” which “will appeal to just about any YA reader who likes excitement and adventure. The emotional journeys ...are also well described and will be of great interest.... This will surely have a wide YA readership.”
